Hooray for Hidden Veggies!

In Eat Your Brownies, er, Veggies, celebrity cookbook author Mark Bittman describes the idea of hiding veggies in kid-friendly food as “moronic”, not to mention “deceptive”.  Okay, he’s got a point. It is deceptive, and kids should grow up with an open appreciation of veggies, rather than finding out as adults that veggie consumption was forced on them without their consent.

But I think it’s a great idea to make yummy foods healthier without broadcasting the healthy enhancements. Even adults like to feel that they’re indulging once in a while without an agenda. Why not raise kids to honestly enjoy veggies while also incorporating veggies in unexpected – and undeclared – ways?

It’s the best of both worlds. You can have your cake and your zucchini, too!
