But would it work for us?

dog Body fat always gets a bad rap, but are there times when it can be helpful?  Well, if you’re a dog frozen to the sidewalk, yeah, it can mean the difference between life and death.

A 120-pound border collie named Jiffy froze to the sidewalk when his owner left him out overnight in the frigid temps of Sheboygan, Wisconsin.   The Sheboygan County Humane Society reported that the dog’s “morbid obesity” kept it alive as the thermometer hovered in single digits.  Thank goodness for Jiffy’s extra insulation!  (And thank goodness the neglectful owner of the rotund mutt has been arrested!)

Now, I wonder: does our fat help us humans stay warm when the frost creeps in?  Has anyone ever studied homeless people to know if the heavier ones survive winters better?  I’d like to know.  I know our fat can sustain us through famine, but it’d be nice to know it has other survival benefits as well.
